Healthy Living: Water and Food Sanitation

TREAT YOUR WATER: Many kinds of diseases can live in water that has not been treated even if you get it from the bore hole.  These diseases can make you very sick so you should always treat your water.

WASH YOUR HANDS: You should be washing your hands with soap and water every time you use the latrine.  When you go for short call or long call, your hands will be touching bacteria/germs.  These bacteria/germs can make you very sick if they get into your body.  When you wash your hands with soap and water it kills these bacteria/germs.  You should also wash your hands with soap and water before you eat food using your hands.  Bacteria/germs can live on your hands for some time if you do not wash often so it is best to always wash before eating meals or snacks.

WASH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: Any fruits or vegetables you do not cook or peel away the skin you should be washing them with soap and water. For example, a tomato has a skin that you do not peel away. You can eat the tomato whole. You do not know everyone who has touched the tomato so you do not know what bacteria/germs are living on the tomato. You should wash the tomato before you eat it to destroy any bacteria/germs on it.

KEEP FRUIT/VEGETABLES AWAY FROM RAW MEAT: Raw meat, meat that is not cooked, has many germs/bacteria that get killed when you cook it.  The germs/bacteria that live on the raw meat can transfer to any fruits and vegetables that come in contact with the meat or surfaces tat the meat has been touching. Then if you eat these fruits/vegetables you can get very sick. This is why you keep the meat separated from the fruit/vegetables.

GLOWing: Developing Uganda/Bringing it Back to the Community

Camp GLOW is over. But that doesn’t mean that the fun needs to end! You’ve learned a lot at Camp and have proved that you are an excellent leader. So now here is your chance to take your leadership skills back to your community and school. Start a Life Skills Club; petition the administration to take athletics more seriously; encourage other youth to save money or start an Income Generating Activity.

Teamwork: Blindfolded Obstacle Course

Designed as an activity to encourage trust and communication, the girls worked together to guide their fellow blindfolded campers to the end of the obstacle course.

There are different ways to go about this.  Often it’s easiest to make up a story; you can tell them that they are lost in a forest with their friend. Maybe they had followed some bees to see if they could find their hive and get the honey.  They did find the hive, but unfortunately, their friend got stung all over his/her face and now cannot see. Their task is to safely guide them home. Make sure everyone knows where ‘home’ is and how they should get there. You can give them a specific path to follow, or let them find their own way.

This activity can also be modified in to a race or also by blindfolding everyone, having everyone hold hands and have the entire group navigate the obstacle course together.

Life Skills: Public Speaking

The purpose of this activity is to overcome the fears of public speaking and learn tips in becoming a more effective and confident public speaker.
