THURSDAY

Day 4- 9th December 2010

Theme of the Day: We GLOW with goals.

Quote of the Day:

Speaker of the Day: INFORMATION COMING

Healthy Living: Malaria

Malaria is still a large problem in Uganda and even with large initiatives people aren't protecting themselves as well as they should.  This session emphasized prevention and ways to protect yourself from the deadly Anopheles mosquito and malaria parasite combination.  Girls also watched videos of the parasite at work in body and the problems multiple infections can create.

GLOWing: HIV Truths and Myths

For this activity girls were given statements about HIV and had to decide if they were true or false.  Each statement lead to a short discussion and explaination about the fact or myth.  Girls were also given a question and answer time to ask follow up questions and clarify some of the information they had learned throughout the week.

Arts and Crafts: Picturing Yourself in 10 Years

With goal setting being one of the day's focal point the girls had a session on picturing their future.  They drew pictures of where they hoped to be in 10 years and then were asked about what challenges might be there.  After talking about the problems they drew the challenge and a possible solution they could use.  The girls then added the challenge and solution to their pictures as reminders there will be bumps in the road, but always a route to where they want to go.

Teamwork: Human Knot

This activity was used to emphasize the importance of working as a team, following directions, and problem solving.  Commonly used as an icebreaker in the United States, this game allowed the groups of ladies to come closer and understand each other more completely. Clear instructions were required to know who was supposed to go over one arm or under a different arm.  Also, with the girls twisted, sometimes the normal group leader couldn't see the other girls and needed to rely on other to help with the solution.  All in all the human knot can just be a fun activity too.

Lifeskills: Goal Setting for the Future

What is a goal?  Goals provide a sense of direction and purpose.  Uganda culture doesn't have a lot of focus on the future and this session got the girls to see how goals can be set to become a plan to reach their dreams.  They didn't just cover long term goals, but daily ones as well which get people started on the path to achieving success regularly.
