Healthy Living: What is Sex?

Sex is an important topic to discuss, especially with girls who are going through puberty and are reaching sexual maturity.  This session created an avenue of discussion about  sex, key terms used when talking about sex, reasons people should choose to have sex, reasons people should choose not to have sex and questions that should be answered before deciding to have sex.  This forum allowed girls to discuss a very sensitive issue which isn't readily discussed with students, male or female, in Uganda.

GLOWing: Taking Care of Your Body, Puberty

As we pass from being a child into an adult we all go through the awkward threshold which is puberty.  We grow physically and mentally in ways we haven't before and sometimes it is nice to know you are not alone in this transition.  This session focused on the changes our body's make for both boys and girls and how those changes affect how we need to act.  A large emphasis was put on hygiene and questions the girls had about their body changes.

Arts and Crafts: Create Your Own Team Symbol

In this exercise, the girls created flags that represented each team and their mascot.

They were encouraged to brainstorm design ideas separately, then come together as a team to choose the design elements for their large flag. Emphasis was placed on making the design unique, coming to a decision as a group, and involving each member of the team. Reinforcing lessons from other sessions such as teamwork, assertiveness, and self esteem in a more relaxed environment allowed the girls to practice new skills while still having fun.

 Teamwork:  Condom Demonstration

In this session participants will learn the importance of condom use.  As condoms provide an efficient barrier—if used properly—from the exchange of bodily fluids, it is important that people learn and understand the proper techniques of condom use to aid in prevention of displeasing consequences from unprotected sex.

Since HIV and other STIs are usually obtained through sex as well as pregnancy, not having sex is a good way to prevent these outcomes.  If someone has sex, latex condoms are a good barrier to protect one from coming in contact with sexual fluids.  Ask if anyone has seen a condom.  Discuss what is known, feared and correct misconceptions.  Be sure to express that condoms are not 100% effective, but this is usually due to inconsistent use or not being used correctly.

Throughout the session emphasis was placed on the use of condoms for the protection of all individuals.  The importance of condoms as a means of protection of life is integral and the safety and well-being of the campers is the ultimate goal.

Lifeskills: How to Be a Good Friend

Friends are very important for most teenagers.  Good friends can continue throughout life, and support us even when times are tough.  We can all learn how to be a better friend all through our lives.  Key ideas are listed below

  • A good friend shows respect, responsibility, understanding, caring, effort and truthfulness.
  • A good friend helps you, thinks about you and works together.
  • It is normal to have a crush on someone, but a crush is not the same as love
  • Feelings of love can make us do dangerous things, for example, have sex without a condom.
  • Boys and girls can be friends without having sex.
