Day 3- Wednesday, December 8, 2010
Message of the Day:
Theme: We GLOW with good health.
Quote: "The greatest wealth is health."
Healthy Living: HIV Transmission
What is HIV? How does it spread? These are topics covered often in this country, but along with the answers come some misconceptions. Uganda has made great strides in reducing the rate of HIV in their country, but rumors still persist and distort facts explained in schools. Members of the community, teachers and even family members miscommunicate or perpetuate these myths and this session goes back to the true facts about contracting HIV.
GLOWing: HIV & STIGMA
HIV status is a very personal thing and declaring yourself as a person who is living positively can lead to many stigmas from the community. This activity starts with the girls having to decide from a picture and description about a person if they are HIV positive or negative. After the activity ends they discuss that there is no way to know the status of a person through visual appearance. People who are living positively can still lead normal and healthy lives and should be supported by others.
Paint can put your world into colour! Use flour, water and food colour to make water-based paint and whatever you want to paint on. You can use paintbrushes or fingers to draw with (paint will wash out of your clothes). Use markers to draw outlines of students’ bodies on the paper or of students’ hands that you can paint in or out of. The activity can be fitted to any topic (you can draw your responses to a discussion, self portrait about what you are good at or what you want to be, or just a painting of the world around you). The biggest part of the activity is to encourage creativity and just to have fun!
Teamwork: Self-Defense Strategies
Many people think of self-defense as a karate kick to the groin or jab in the eyes of an attacker. But self-defense actually means doing everything possible to avoid fighting someone who threatens or attacks you. Self-defense is all about using your smarts — not your fists.
